Overview

Matthew Moroney co-chairs the firm’s Insurance and Healthcare Fraud Litigation department.

Matt regularly advises insurance carriers on multi-claim investigations involving healthcare providers located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.  Matt and his team regularly analyze complex data, including medical records and billing, on an individual and multi-claim basis to identify questionable patterns and to assess potential fraud.  Matt has successfully litigated large-scale affirmative actions with fraud, RICO, and declaratory judgment claims, which recouped millions of dollars for his clients.

Matt also leads the firm’s Recovery and Subrogation Team.  Through the firm’s aggressive and proactive strategies, GMR provides cost-effective representation to its clients who have made substantial recoveries.  Because casualty losses can strike at any moment, Matt and his team are available around the clock to provide timely and proactive investigations using the newest technologies. Matt and his team are committed to helping their clients limit their exposure on questionable claims and ensure that they are not damaged by fraudulent practices in the future.

For more than two decades, Matt has accumulated extensive trial experience in the state and federal courts in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.  He is well-versed in state and federal civil procedure and evidentiary practice. Matt has extensive experience in all stages of litigation, from the initial pleadings through appeals, and extensive expertise conducting examinations under oath of insureds and healthcare providers.

Matt enjoys the challenge of handling complex and complicated cases others would find difficult and resolving them successfully for his clients.   Matt regularly handles cases for victims of accidents who suffered serious personal injuries, along with individuals who have had their civil rights violated or their employment wrongfully terminated with the average recovery being well into the six figures.

During his career, Matt has won well over 75 jury trials and many more nonjury trials and arbitrations. Matt is equally proud of the meaningful results he achieved for clients without stepping foot into the courtroom.  He is recognized for working well with opposing counsel, arbitrators, and judges while maintaining the highest standard of representation for his clients.

In addition to mentoring his team to ensure they provide high-level legal services, Matt has been active in the management of the firm overseeing its growth with the addition of the firm’s New York office during his tenure as partner. He also makes time to give presentations regularly.  Matt is frequently asked by organizations to speak and share insight on how to identify and combat fraud.

During his free time, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and his two boys, along with following the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, Flyers, and Villanova basketball.

Successfully representing an insurer in a statutory insurance action against a pain management and anesthesia practice in New Jersey

Successfully representing an insurer in a RICO and fraud action against chiropractors and physicians in New York, who allegedly submitted fraudulent bills and records and a professional corporation that was allegedly improperly owned by a layperson

Trial verdict in favor of an individual who was sued under a state fraudulent conveyance statute.  Although the client was accused of purchasing a property for a nominal amount from an insider, the client was vindicated on all counts at trial.

Jury verdict of more than 15 million dollars against a group of physicians, chiropractors, an MRI center, and a pharmacy for fabricating patient records and billing for unnecessary treatment, testing, and pharmaceuticals. The jury verdict not only included insurance benefits paid in PIP claims, but included payments made in third party, personal injury matters. The jury verdict was upheld by a federal appellate court.

Jury verdict of more than 7 million dollars against a chiropractic office, a chiropractor, and laypersons who owned and controlled the practice and submitted fraudulent bills and records.  On the eve of trial, one of the defendants filed for bankruptcy in order to delay the matter. Our team successfully obtained an emergency dismissal of the bankruptcy. The jury’s verdict on damages included all PIP payments as well as payments made in the settlement of third party, personal injury matters.

Jury verdict of 1.5 million dollars against an attorney and a medical office for submitting fraudulent claims.
